The presentation I decided to write about was Nick’s presentation about obesity in the U.S. I knew that obesity was a problem but I didn’t realize it was this bad, according to his presentation, obesity in the U.S. is a major problem because 34% of people are obese. That is 1 out of every 3 people. Also, I learned that African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to become obese than Caucasians, also Asians are the least likely to become obese. This was hard for me to understand because I had always thought it didn’t matter what race you were, I thought your eating habits and how regularly you exercise was what decided if you were obese. This presentation made an impact on me because knowing that 1 in 3 Americans are obese something needs to be done and I not only have to control my eating habits, but help others control there’s.

Drafting Athletes out of High School
One of the major controversies throughout pro ports for some time has been drafting high school athletes straight to the pros. The sports this has been an issue the most in has been in the NBA. In the NBA, Commisioner David Stern has restricted this by saying at least one year of college has to be completed. In response to this many high school athletes who certainly have the talent have been arguing this, and I am going to have to take the side of the high school athletes. The high school athletes should be able to be drafted from highschool because everybody has the right to make a living and if basketball is their way of making a living and the NBA is resricting it, than that is not right. Also many notable NBA stars today skipped college such as the two best players in the league, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, proving college is not necassary to excell in pro sports.

Carmelo Anthony
In english this semester, I have been reading about Carmelo Anthony and the recent trade rumors. These rumors are a huge deal beacause not only the best player on the Nuggets, Carmelo Anthony is involved in these rumors but also our hometown hero, Chaunce Billups is. There have been multiple rumors such as Carmelo Anthony and Chaunce Billups for Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, and two first-round draft picks but recently, the owner of the Nets, Mikhail Prokhorov, has said they trade is dead. Although many people believe they are still working "behind the scenes," we have to asssume thats out of the picture. So now although the best offers are out the window (Nets deal and Clippers deal us Blake Griffin), there are still extremely attractive offers and I have come to the conclusion that Carmelo Anthony will be traded before seasons end or the nuggets will keep him hopeing to use a franchise tag that will hopefully be included in the new collective bargaining agreement.

PLN#3 LeBron James
In the book I am reading about LeBron James, towards the end of the book as LeBron reaches a superstar status, the OHSAA begins to keep a closer eye on LeBron to make sure that he doesn’t “loose his amateur status.” This means that LeBron cannot accept any gifts from stores or get paid to do anything, but several controversies about these rules came up as LeBron got better and better as a senior. The first situation was when LeBron’s mother, Gloria, bought him a new car, a hummer to be specific. This hummer cost a grand total of 90,000 dollars and led to an OHSAA investigation to make sure this hummer was not a gift from an agent. Normally this would not be an issue, but considering that the hummer was more than every house on LeBrons street, this became an issue. But LeBron handled the situation well and no suspension was handed to him but unfortunately now the OHSAA would keep a closer eye on LeBron now. Finally later in the book, LeBron was hanging out with some friends and shopping in his home town when he came across his favorite place, a throwback jersey store. LeBron entered the store was given 2 jerseys that cost 900 dollars for free and got in trouble with the OHSAA for “losing his amateur status and received a 3 game suspension but everything ended well for LeBron and he finished his senior year and was drafted 1st overall in the 2003 NBA draft.

As LeBron James entered highschool, he was just a normal kid who happend to be talented at basketball, but by the end of highschol LeBron had the status of a celebrity and was faced with lots of difficult dicisions. Even though he was only in highschool, LeBron was not a normal kid. LeBron averaged about 40 points per game and was regarded as the best highschool basketball player to ever play the game. Due to his well deserved celebrity status during his senior year, LeBron was faced with lots of tough decisions. Even though some of these decisions were no big deal to us, they were a huge deal to state officials such as the OHSAA and Clair Muscaro. One of these decisions was buying the hummer, because LeBron had done so well in school and handled the past year so well, Gloria, his mother decided to buy him an $80,000 hummer (which was more than every house in LeBrons neighborhood). Clair Muscaro had been keeping a close eye on LeBron and when the hummer was purchased, he assumed it was a gift from an agent and he immediatly launched an inverstigation. Even though LeBron was innocent it was the wrong decision to buy the hummer and even though he is a good person he made a bad decision and should have purchased the hummer after the season so no one would assume it was a gift from an agent.

LeBron James
LeBron James, arguably the best basketball player to ever play the game, has had one of the most succesful careers at just the young age of of 25. In this book LeBron James is born into a very poor family with no father. Luckily, his mother meets a man named Eddy Jackson, Eddy is very caring and he cares a lot about LeBron. As LeBron gets older his family moves and moves and then moves again and at age 7 his grandma, Gloria, dies. After shes dies the James house is destroyed and they find a new home with friends and with family. Finally at age 12 LeBron and Gloria find a permenant home and young LeBron begins to play organized sports. LeBron, being extremely authletic was not just the best player on his basketball team but was also a football star, in fact many say that football was his best sport. As LeBron got older, Gloria struggled to raise him to he went to live with family friends. Missing 81 days of school in 4th grade with Gloria, he missed 0 days of school with his new family. As LeBron entered high school he moved back in with his mom. LeBron attended St Mary-St Vincent Academy, a school highly comitted to academics and not known for sports, but Lebron and his friend "lil" dru, Sian, and Willie changed that. The "fab" five brought the school 3 state titles in the division 5A. LeBron James's career continues with the Miami Heat.
